Assam Flood||Ground Report-DEEPJYOTI DEKA and NEPTUNE BARMAN

Flood has been a major problem of Assam for many years. The reason behind the flood is the lifeline of Assam, Brahmaputra. Millions get displaced, livelihood is lost, lives are lost. Once the floods excessive water was welcomed by the people of Assam because it made land more fertile but now it is leading to disaster. The government is trying hard to fight against the flood year after year. But deforestation and an increase in the number of people living in the bank of the river have made the disaster more dangerous. The flood has hit recently again in 2020 and 23 districts are affected out of 33 districts. Thousands of people are forced to leave their homes and most of them belong to below the poverty line. At the same time landslide has been killing people in Assam. The animals are also majorly affected by the flood and they tried to escape the flood and came out of the forest to the villages and cities as reported in Kaziranga and Baksha. Barpeta has emerged as the worst affected district with nearly 1.33 lakh being affected followed by dhemaji with almost one lakh people and nalbari with more than 96,000 people. Ironically the human also migrated similarly like the animals due to flood. And 21 people lost their lives. Ironically the lifeline of Assam becomes the reason of disaster for thousands year after year. The people are seen protesting against the government for not taking the necessary steps for the flood-affected people. Multidisciplinary nature of environmental studies can help to solve this problem, we cannot solve this problem single-handedly. Every action of humans affects the environment so we cannot stop this but at least we can reduce the effects of the disaster.
